16th September 2009

omg I'm in Philosophy right now and it's so boring. I'm learning about different types of arguments (Ad Misericordiam, Ad Ignorantiam, omgahdenglishpls) and fallacies. I thought this course would be at least a little bit interesting! It's so technical. That's the only reason I'm still hanging on to this course and not dropping it - because it's easy. There are no assignments, attendance/participation doesn't matter, there are only quizzes & a final year exam. I hope I can use it to help pull up my GPA! (: I'm writing this post in my notebook (my wonderfully colourful notebook from Xue Ting!) now because my laptop only has 16% battery life left - that's 19 mins (yah. I know. Why so short!! >:( ) - and there is an hour left to this lecture. Great!

...ok, we just learnt the difference beween using 'if', 'only if' and 'if and only if'. Sigh. I don't get why we have to read the book and come listen to the prof talk about the same thing the book does. They should just print us notes in that case.

Ok ok enough Philosophy 120 rant!

So HELLO FRIENDS BACK IN SINGAPORE/other parts of the world!
I MISS YOU ALL :/
Here's an update about my life in Vancouver so far! :)
I arrived here on August 13th with my mum. We went to shop for my dress the next day before picking my sister and Pat up from the airport! They flew over from Toronto just for my cousin's wedding. Yay! (: So happy to see them again! Ok my laptop just ran out of battery...

20 more mins! Yay!

So it was my cousin's wedding on August 15th. The afternoon ceremony was beautiful. It was held in the pavilion in a park.

Oh yeah coffee is very good for lectures like this. This is what my table layout looks like right now, in the lecture theatre:

Whoa could this lecture go any slower...

So anyway, when the bride (my cousin) entered with her dad (my uncle), crying avalanche prevailed. Her dad was crying as he was walking her down the aisle and that contagious crying led to all the girl cousins (including me) tearing! My cousin's brother, who was one of the groomsmen standing up in front, was crying too. We're such an emotional family! I swear it runs in the genes.

Material Conditional )

The minister said "I'm so sorry we made your dad do this." hahaha.

Material Biconditional )

The wedding was lovely! And omg the dinner was in Vancouver's convention centre and the hall was enormous, plus one side was entirely glass windows so we had a spectacular view of the sea. Fantastic! There was an open bar and a dessert buffet, live band and acoustic singer on the porch. My cousin also rented a photobooth for the wedding dinner; those types that you use to take 4 x 4 passport-sized digital prints. It was so fun because everyone can keep going back to take pictures!

Ok it's a new day now and once again I'm in Philosophy 120 lecture. Omg, he started the lecture at about 2 slides before my laptop battery died the last lecture. That's like 10 slides we covered last week. So anyway, for those of you who don't already know, I'm currently residing in a basement. Yes, I live underground. See, the landlady split her house into 3 as so:

So I'm living in the basement unit, which has 2 bedrooms and is pretty spacious! (: But since it's a basement, there is barely any natural light in the place, plus it gets pretty cold. It's really convenient though, once I exit the back gate, it's the supermarket! Haha. And I have 4 direct buses to school, which is a 15 min bus ride away. Rent is cheap too! I'm living with my brother (temporarily) and a family friend. :D

Vancouver is really lovely, I'm enjoying the weather right now. It's been pretty sunny and cool at the same time! I dread the period when it starts raining every day. Vancouver is well known for its rain, especially in winter! Brrr. I can really see why Vancouver was voted most beautiful/livable city in the world! It's Fall (they don't call it "autumn" here) now and it's the first fall season I'm experience ever! Leaves are starting to turn red bit by bit! Just like this book!

I signed up for UBC's annual longboat race (it's like dragonboat!) and just had a clinic for it the day before yesterday! It was fun! I like rowing. I wish my arms were stronger though. The actual race is next weekend - should be fun! (: Yesterday I went for the Aids Walk For Life at Stanley Park (some park near downtown) and it was such a perfect day for a walk in the park (: Got some merchandise at the fair and enjoyed a hotdog on the lawn! Oh yes! That's another thing I love about Vancouver! We can sit on the lawns because the grass is nice and dry! It's like we see on TV shows where the kids gather and hang out on the lawn (i.e. Skins, Greek, etc.)! Sweet. :D

I really miss Singapore though. I miss local food (especially Chai Tao Kway!)

Truth-table testing )

I miss home and all my friends and family. And Toffee! Junior! Caramel! I miss how everything's so convenient in Singapore, its efficient

public transport system, how everything closes really late. I miss nightlife! Suppers! Just being online with everyone else at night! People here sleep so early and wake up early! Ugh, so healthy. Perfect example: you know how clubs in Singapore close at 4 or 5 a.m.? Over here they close at midnight or 1 a.m. Hahaha. That's when clubs get crowded in Singapore. I haven't been to a club over here yet though, wonder if it's fun!

Another thing about here is that although people are a lot friendlier and more helpful, they won't warm up to you as quickly as people do in Singapore. Maybe it's their culture, or perhaps it's just the culture difference because everyone's from all over the world. I don't have many good friends just yet, hope it gets better soon! Today was a good day. Talked to some people in class (: And I'm becoming less shy to participate in class too!

Ok class just ended! I guess this marks the end of my post too, then! Til next time! (:

P.S. I just got back my Philosophy 120 quiz yesterday. I got 82%! :D
